ANS: The narrator (Jerome) volunteered to do the packing because he thought that he knew more about packing than any other person and wanted to boss the job.

ANS: George and Harris agreed to him at once. They sat down comfortably and began to a cigar. Jerome did not like this at all. He only wanted to superintend the job. He wants to boss the things and keep directing them about how to do it.

ANS: Jerome's real intention was to keep directing George and Harris about how to do it. He never wanted to do the packing himself. He wanted to superintend the job.

ANS: After the bag was shut and strapped, Harris asked the narrator (Jerome) " aren't you going to put the boots in ". He wanted to show that the narrator (Jerome) was not good at packing. That's why he waited till then to ask.
6. What " horrible idea " occurred to Jerome a little later?
ANS: The horrible idea that occurred to Jerome was that if he had packed his toothbrush or not.
7. Why did Jerome have to open the packed bag?
ANS: Jerome had to reopen the packed bag because he found that he had packed his tobacco-pouch in it.
8. What does Jerome say was Montmorency's ambition in life? What do you think of Montmorency and why?
ANS: According to Jerome, Montmorency's ambition in life was to get in the way of others. He would squirm where he was not wanted. If he could be a perfect nuisance, and makes people mad, and has things thrown at his head, he would feel his day had not been wasted. Montmorency was indeed a very unusual dog.
9. Of the three, Jerome, George, and Harris, who do you think is the best or the worst packer? Support your answer with details from the text.
ANS: I think all of them are no different from each other. Each of them plays their part in adding to the confusion. George and Harris indeed show their inefficiency in packing. But the author also shows his carelessness. Sometimes he forgets to pack the boots, then gets busy haunting for his toothbrush, and finally packs his tobacco-pouch by mistake. George and Harris start packing the strawberry jam on the top of a tomato and squashes it. They pack the pastries at the bottom, putting heavy things on top. The pastries are smashed. Then they try to put butter in the kettle. It doesn't go in and what was in, wouldn't come out. At last, they manage to get it. Thus we can conclude that all three friends were the worst packers.
10. How did Montmorency 'contribute' to the packing?
ANS: Montmorency came and down on things just when they were wanted to be packed. Whenever Harris or George reached out for anything, his cold clamp nose come in their way. He put his legs into the jam. He fiddled with teaspoons. He got into the hamper and spoiled three of them.
11. Do you find this story funny? What are the humorous elements in it? (Pick out at least three; think about what happens, as well as how it is described.)?
ANS: The story is really funny because it contains many humorous elements. Some examples of humorous elements are:
I. The situation when Harris packed the strawberry jam on the top of the tomatoes and smashed.
II. They put things behind them, and couldn't find them.
III. When George kept the butter on the chair and sat on it. They kept on finding the butter but they didn't know that the butter had got on George's back.
